At the Lois Ambitho Foundation (LAF), we believe that every stage of life deserves dignity, purpose, and opportunities for personal fulfillment. One of the meaningful ways we achieve this is through our Modelling and Pottery Program, an initiative designed to engage elderly individuals in creative, therapeutic, and productive activities that contribute positively to their emotional well-being and economic independence.
Pottery has long been recognized as a powerful form of artistic expression and therapy. For many elderly individuals, especially those who have experienced loneliness, neglect, or social isolation, engaging in creative activities helps restore a sense of purpose and belonging. At LAF, pottery sessions provide a calm and supportive environment where participants can express themselves through craftsmanship while interacting with fellow participants. These sessions foster social connections, reduce feelings of isolation, and encourage meaningful engagement within the community.
Through guided pottery sessions facilitated by trained volunteers and staff members, elderly participants learn and practice the art of shaping clay into useful and decorative items. Using locally available materials, they create a variety of handcrafted products such as pots, bowls, decorative pieces, flower vases, and other household items. Each piece reflects not only skill and creativity but also the rich cultural traditions and craftsmanship that many elderly individuals have carried with them throughout their lives.
Beyond creativity, the pottery program plays an important role in enhancing physical and mental well-being. The process of moulding and shaping clay helps improve hand–eye coordination, strengthens fine motor skills, and stimulates cognitive function. The rhythmic nature of working with clay can also be deeply therapeutic, offering participants a sense of relaxation and mindfulness. For many elderly individuals who may struggle with stress, anxiety, or emotional challenges, pottery becomes a calming activity that promotes mental wellness and personal satisfaction.
Another important aspect of the pottery program is its income-generating potential. The handcrafted products created by participants can be showcased and sold during community events, exhibitions, and partner markets. This not only provides an opportunity for the elderly to contribute economically but also reinforces a sense of independence and pride in their work. Knowing that their creations are valued and appreciated by others boosts self-esteem and helps restore a sense of purpose that many elderly individuals may feel they have lost.
The Modelling and Pottery Program also preserves valuable cultural knowledge and traditional craftsmanship. Many elderly participants possess skills and techniques that have been passed down through generations. Through this program, they are able to share their knowledge, inspire others, and keep traditional art forms alive within the community. This exchange of knowledge strengthens intergenerational connections and promotes cultural appreciation.
At its core, the pottery initiative reflects the mission of the Lois Ambitho Foundation: to provide compassionate, dignified, and holistic support that enhances the quality of life for the elderly. By combining creativity, therapy, social interaction, and economic empowerment, the program creates a positive environment where elderly individuals feel valued, productive, and connected.
